The last of the breakaway group, Carapaz and Mass, were caught up again by Pogacar and Vengergaard in the final kilometer. The two overall leaders passed each other about 2.5 kilometers from the summit. In the end, Pogacar did not give the Dane any more chances and won the fifth stage of this Tour de France. Richard Carapaz was 23 seconds behind and finished third.

In the end, Kevin Geniets finished 19th (+5:28) after being in the lead for a long time until he was caught up 8 km before the finish line. Bob Jungels finished 41st with a 12:56 delay.

Overall, Tadej Pogacar defended the yellow jersey and overall victory in Sunday’s time trial should not be taken away from him again. Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard consolidated second place in the overall classification. The Dane leads Remco Evernepoel by 2 minutes and 50 seconds before the last stage. From the Luxembourg perspective, Bob Jungels climbed to 32nd place (+2:24:12) and Kevin Geniets jumped to 41st place (+3:37:14).

The final mountain stage saw the riders cover 132.8km from Nice back into the Alps to Col Couillole, with one Category 2 summit and three Category 1 summits to master before Sunday’s time trial.

Before the second hill, Col de Turini, some cyclists had already set off in separate groups. Kevin Geniets was first in the chase group, but he joined the lead group with Richard Carapaz a kilometer before the summit, along with two other riders. At the top of the col, the favorites led the peloton by about 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

At the foot of Colde la Colmiane, about 45 km from the finish line, the 10 riders had less than four minutes to lead. There were many accelerations on the climb, but no one was able to distance themselves from the leading group. Richard Carapaz was the first to reach the col and was awarded the Mountain Trophy. The yellow jersey peloton picked up the pace, resulting in a delay of only about three minutes at the summit.

With about 15 km to the finish, the leading group of riders gradually had to let go, including Kevin Geniets. Soon, only Richard Carapaz and Enric Mas were at the top. During the climb to the Couillole Pass, few cyclists were able to keep up with the Maillot Jaune team.

The favorites then gradually caught up with the breakaway group, finishing just a minute late with 5km to the summit. Here, Vengergaard fought back to pull away from Evenpool, but Pogacar stayed with the Dane. The two leaders caught up with Carapaz and Mas with 2.5km to go. In the end, Pogacar had the better legs and crossed the finish line a few seconds ahead of Vengergaard.
