Deep, wide, fast, and loud! “Tune-in” is a huge passion for a group of people.
“Tuning” itself isn’t banned either. But modified cars aren’t always or legally driven. Police first noticed an increase in illegal tuning.
Yet, an evening appointment on the Grand Place rarely goes unnoticed. Residents of the surrounding area often complain about Zodi. André Schaack, commissioner and head of the National Traffic and Road Safety Service of the Police, confirms that the phenomenon of illegal gatherings has become increasingly serious:
“If we look at the numbers, in 2020 we had 10 reports of such incidents. Last year in 2023 there were 31, so this year we have 31 as of today’s date. This means that the trend there is upwards.”
On top of that, today’s communications capabilities mean that the organizers of such events are usually not from this country.
“It could be Germany, France, Belgium, of course, but there are other countries too. The same is true for British people coming here.”
In recent years, modified races have been held in Kockelscheier, Conter, Ettelbrück, Echternach or Schmædd.
Noise and traffic, violations of road regulations (e.g. dangerous driving manoeuvres), vehicles that are technically non-compliant and could affect traffic safety. Among other things, these violations have already been discovered. This can be expensive:
“Our taxes start at 24 euros and 49 euros, and then go up to 250 euros, and some will also have points deducted. If individual violations are found, they will be accumulated.”
Recently, the route code was adjusted to make seizures easier in certain situations. Even modifications involving environmental rules can be controlled and recorded for a period of time. Several police officers have also received additional training to better identify illegal modifications. In any case, the police have sent out the message that they are taking action against illegal modifications: “We have already done this kind of ‘killer blow’ in the past, especially in Kockelscheier, where we closed the parking lot.”
Recently, the city conducted a major adjustment control, picking out and inspecting broken-down cars within a few hours.
As for rallies, the options for relevant actors to reorganize popular venues are being studied, for example by installing so-called “gendarme sofas”, or humps, to reduce speed.
