power failureAlex Borg, spokesman for the Opposition in Gozo, said he had been informed that in order for Malta Energy to detect the fault in Gozo, it had to bring a vehicle with the device from Malta, and that this vehicle was used in Malta because the fault also occurred there.

“This is yet another proof that we in Gozo are being treated as second-class citizens,” Borg said.

The areas of Gharb, Ghasri, Kercem and San Lawrenz were without power for up to 15 hours starting on Friday evening. By Saturday afternoon, full power had been restored in Gozo, according to the Enemalta real-time outage map.

“Common sense would tell us that if the power distribution system is weak like the one in Gozo, then there should be a permanent presence on the island so that residents do not have to wait for the power to be restored,” Mr Borg said. “Why did this mismanagement occur? Why did this negligence occur?”

He argued that it was “irresponsible and insulting to know that the damage was caused by an outdated distribution system that was not properly equipped to repair the damage.”

“As the Nationalist Government MP for Gozo, this will be my first priority in Gozo, we will strengthen the electricity distribution system and ensure that we don’t end up in a situation like we are in today. This is a right, not a whim.”

The Nationalist MP expressed his gratitude to the Malta Energy workers “who have worked tirelessly to recover the damage in Malta and Gozo”.
