South Korea Deogam Developed electric vehicle battery technology that the company says could revolutionize the industry. The battery pack harvests energy from the environment and converts it into usable electricity.

Solar cells, thermoelectric generators and piezoelectric materials have been installed along with the battery. In this way, the device can harvest energy from light, heat and motion.

Interesting engineering writingThe idea for the battery came about when the company was considering faster ways to charge its electric buses. So Deogam developed a battery that could recycle the energy lost along the way.

The energy harvesters act as a supplement to the batteries, i.e. they extend the operating distance. The company has not yet revealed more precise details about its technology.

Currently, the battery is being tested in 500 taxis on the South Korean island of Jeju. The taxis are Hyundai’s all-electric Ioniq 5 models. If the experiments go well, the exact solution will be launched in Europe next April.

The technology could also be used in other applications, such as smartphones and watches.

In sports watches, for example, energy could be harvested from the user’s body heat and movement. In future smartphones, the screens could be equipped with solar cells.

Energy harvesters, on the other hand, could allow IoT devices to not have to be charged separately.
