PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — Divers searching the wreckage of a sunken superyacht off Sicily on Wednesday recovered at least one body as searchers continued to look for more missing passengers and questions intensified about why the sailboat sank so quickly.
Divers and rescuers unloaded a body bag from a rescue boat that entered Porticello harbor, a discovery that confirmed the search for plane debris on the sea floor 50 meters (165 feet) below the surface was a salvage operation, not a rescue effort.
A 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht sank in the storm early Monday while anchored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the vessel was hit by a tornado over the water, a so-called waterspout, and sank quickly.
Fifteen people escaped in lifeboats and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was found on Monday – that of Recaldo Thomas, the Antiguan-born cook on board.
Six people are still missing, including British tech mogul Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, and the colleague who successfully defended him in his recent U.S. federal fraud trial.
