As fashion trends and consumer habits change, the shoemaking profession is also disappearing.
Its representatives claim that within a decade their skills will become a relic of the past: young people will simply throw away their old shoes, while the service will be too expensive for older people.
Remigijus Kulakauskas, who works at the city’s central market, has been repairing shoes for nearly 35 years, but he doubts his activity will see another anniversary.
Even before the pandemic, he said, he had felt the decline in customer traffic. But he never would have imagined that he would have to work almost from an idea.
“I have been doing this job since I was 18 years old. I never believed that one day there would be no need for the profession of shoemaker”, R. Kulakauskas admits.
According to him, now only pensioners or disabled people can do this job, for whom it is just a supplement to their pension.
People in Panevěž still like to repair winter or autumn shoes. No one wears summer shoes anymore. According to the shoemaker, now almost everyone walks in sneakers, even with an evening dress or wedding dress.
