“I’m planning a trip to Belarus – what’s the current situation at the border?” This is an everyday question that often arises in traveler groups on social networks. Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AM) warns that it is pointless for people to continue visiting a country that supports the aggressor Russia and expects the rule of law when things go wrong. How many people go there and why? Is there anything to see? How dangerous is it to go to Belarus?
According to information provided by the State Border Guard, the number of people traveling to Belarus has increased significantly in the past two years. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, 84,329 Latvian nationals migrated to Belarus in 2019, and 117,764 Latvian nationals migrated to Belarus in 2022. It is worth noting that Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. This attack was also supported Belarus. Likewise, from April 2022, Latvian residents can visit Belarus by land without a visa.
Why do people go there? VR representative Inga Bēķe explains: “When conducting border checks at border crossing points, state border guard officers do not record the reason for departure, but people crossing the border are surveyed during border checks. The most common reasons for travel include visiting relatives and friends, tourism, shopping, and medical reception services.”
