ESG Africa, Africa’s largest ESG and sustainability conference, is gearing up for its much-anticipated third edition, set to take place at the Sandton Convention Centre on 1-2 October 2024. Conference organisers ESG Africa have put together an exciting and interactive programme designed to equip attendees with practical skills and tools to help embed ESG/sustainability principles into their organisations. This year’s event promises to delve deeper into this key theme of implementation, and emphasise the important role of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in driving sustainable development and ESG initiatives across the continent.

A core element of the ESG Africa Conference has always been its unique focus on adopting an African lens to view sustainability and ESG strategies. Wendy Poulton, Event Director for ESG Africa, highlighted the leadership qualities required for the ongoing commitment to exploring sustainable practices in an African context. “Our conference has always been committed to providing a platform for thought-provoking discussions on the intersection of sustainability, ESG and organizational leadership. Over the years, we have delved into the myriad interrelated issues that shape the intricate nature of the ESG landscape and how it becomes relevant and applicable through an African lens,” said Poulton.
Building on this, Joshua Low, co-founder and director of the conference, outlined the forward-looking theme for the 2024 conference. “As sustainability professionals, the focus should extend beyond theoretical discussions to the practical implementation of ESG principles within the framework of an organization,” said Low. “This year’s conference aims to provide attendees with tangible tools and strategies to drive effective change in their respective fields.”
The 2024 program combines strategic conversations with practical sessions, ensuring participants gain actionable insights and best practices for integrating sustainability into daily business operations. Attendees can expect interactive workshops, engaging panel discussions, and breakout sessions designed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nuances of sustainability and ESG implementation. Case studies will be showcased in all sessions, especially in the breakout sessions, two of which delve into case studies on ecosystem services and system change.
A highlight of the conference will be the focus on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) and their integral role in Africa’s sustainable development landscape. Through dedicated sessions, the event will highlight the challenges faced by MMEs, illuminate innovative solutions, and explore pathways for growth and scalability within a sustainable development framework.
“We firmly believe that SMEs are the bedrock of African economies and play a vital role in driving sustainable practices across sectors. By focusing on SMEs at this year’s conference, we aim to raise awareness of the challenges these organizations face and find innovative ways to help them address them,” said Poulton.
The conference will address some of the most pressing issues in the field of sustainable development and explore potential barriers, foster innovative thinking, and propose new approaches to sustainable development management to achieve positive change. The conference will challenge sustainable development professionals to tackle complex issues, encourage them to expand their thinking, adopt innovative solutions, and have an impact on the real world.
As the conference draws to a close on October 2, delegates can look forward to the prestigious Beyond Awards ceremony, held in conjunction with SAB, which honours individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to driving sustainable change in Africa. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to interact with sustainability service providers and solution providers at the exhibition, promoting collaboration and networking opportunities in the field of sustainability.
The event is proudly sponsored by SAB, with Alexforbes, Webber Wentzel, Nerdma and S&P global being the platinum and gold sponsors of the event.
