Professor Norihiro Nishimoto, Director of the Osaka Rheumatology Clinic in Japan, visited the Republic of San Marino. The day began with a visit to the State Hospital, where he was welcomed by Mariella Mularoni, Secretary of State for Health and Social Security, and Dr. Stefania Volpinari, Head of the Rheumatology and Autoimmune Diseases Module of the Social Security Institute.

Professor Nishimoto was accompanied on a tour of some of the National Hospital’s departments, after which he was received by the Regent Alessandro Rossi and Captain Milena Gasperoni. Also present were Marcello Forcellini, Director of Administration of the ISS, Sergio Rabini, Director of Health and Social Hygiene Activities, Dr. Massimo Arlotti, Special Commissioner during the pandemic, and Dr. Antonio Morri, Director of the Emergency Department. During the hearing, we expressed our sincere gratitude to Professor Nishimoto for his fundamental contribution to the Republic of San Marino during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, Professor Nishimoto facilitated the procurement and delivery of the drug Tocilizumab, a monoclonal antibody essential for the treatment of patients with inflammatory pneumonia caused by the virus. The drug was obtained with the cooperation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Headquarters of San Marino in Japan.

Professor Nishimoto, who has dedicated nearly 40 years of his career to the research of tocilizumab, has been honoured with the Equestrian Order of St Agatha in recognition of his commitment and generosity to patients in San Marino during the pandemic, following his significant donation.

In his speech at the hearing, the professor stressed the importance of putting scientific knowledge at the service of the people, a principle that always guides his work. He also expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and historical and cultural beauty of the Republic of San Marino.
