Prithvisubba Gurung questions Nepal Army’s involvement in development

Kathmandu, June 30. Prithvisubba Gurung, a member of the House of Representatives and deputy secretary-general of the United Marxist-Leninist Party, has questioned the involvement of the Nepal Army in development.

Gurung, speaking in the House session on Wednesday, asked about the development work of the army during a discussion on the Ministry of Defence’s budget for the next fiscal year.

“Political parties, we allow the Nepal Army to do business with it, it is such a sensitive structure, an institution, we allow it to sign contracts. How justifiable is this sensitive issue from a security perspective?” Gurung said.

He believes that leaders should speak on the matter. Today’s leaders cannot open their mouths to talk about the involvement of the Nepal Army in development. But we have to think,” he said.

Gurung said crises emerged in countries when the ambition of the military to advance by participating in development grew.

He said, “If ambition grows too much, what will happen to our democracy and our republic?” Haven’t we seen the crisis caused by the rise of ambition in different countries? We have seen it. Now he’s doing a good, good job. But we have to deal with this.

Gurung also questioned the understanding that national security was the sole responsibility of the Nepal Army.

There is an understanding that national security is only Nepal Army. Our leaders have it too. And there is the party. But I want to say – national security is not just an empty Nepal Army.

He mentioned that the important part, the biggest part, the most reliable part of national security is the Nepal Army, “Besides this, there is the Nepal Police, APF, NID. ” All these institutions have only proper national security.

Gurung said there were no provisions in the law to manage and strengthen national security. Gurung believed that this did not mean the need for democratization of the law.

He said that even when the budget comes, tradition comes. “…it is only traditional,” Gurung said. The budget comes prepared by the joint secretaries of the ministries. Ministers should be able to intervene politically. You have to rise above it.
