Prime Minister John Briceno has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Leroy Almendarez as the new CEO of the Social Security Board (SSB). According to the Prime Minister, the position was posted after Deborah Ruiz indicated that she did not want to renew her contract. As Dr. Almendarez prepares to take over, one of the key things the Prime Minister pointed out is the need to invest the SSB’s funds to avoid increasing employee or employer contributions.

Belize Prime Minister John Briceño: “They went through a long recruitment process, and first of all, I want to express my gratitude to Ms. Ruiz, who has been with the Social Security Administration for nearly her entire career, serving in the role of CEO for many years. After a long recruitment, screening and interview process, they selected Dr. Leroy Almendarez, who has been doing an excellent job as the head of Beltraide. While I am sad to lose him at Beltraide, we are pleased that he will be going to the Social Security Administration to continue to manage one of the most important institutions in the country with the largest trust fund, the workers’ money.”
Ruiz has worked at the SSB for 42 years. She served as acting CEO from 2019 to 2021 and officially took on the substantive title in August 2021. Her contract with the SSB expires this month.
