Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyum said the PDP was one of the political parties that was most vocal in protecting people’s rights before coming to power.
President Yameen was speaking at a rally organised by the People’s National Front (PNF) yesterday.
Addressing the rally, President Yameen said the DPP is the strongest party advocating for people’s rights, freedom of assembly and all democratic rights. However, he said that every time the party comes to power in Sri Lanka, it forgets what it said before. He said that during the DPP government, people’s rights were not fully protected.
“The DPP talks about all democratic rights. But when it comes to power, words and actions are not straightforward. Now the party is a spineless force,” President Yameen said.
President Yameen said the Democratic Party’s political activities have declined recently.
The PNF is a political party formed by President Yameen after he split from the ruling Progressive Congress coalition. In recent years, the Popular Front has held a series of rallies criticising government policies and opposition parties.
