A teacher at a school Perez Zeledon Sentenced to jail for manufacturing material containing Child sexual abuse.
The Deputy Attorney’s Office for Combating Human Trafficking and Illegal Smuggling of Immigrants convicted him of six counts of manufacturing, one count of possession and another count of distributing material containing child sexual abuse content, ultimately sentencing him to 18 years in prison.
On August 1, the Perez Zeledón Criminal Court sentenced him to 46 years in prison, but due to material competition rules, the court adjusted the sentence to 18 years and ordered the suspension of his teaching position.
“The proceedings against the accused began after Interpol Canada sent a report to Costa Rica indicating that images containing sexually explicit content were being distributed to minors using free instant messaging applications,” the ministry said.
Evidence collected by the Prosecutor’s Office during the investigation proves that the crimes were committed between 2018 and 2022 and that different electronic devices were used.
The convicted man worked at the Reponta School in Perez Zeledon and, besides being an educator, he was also the technical director of the girls’ football team of the educational center where he worked and took advantage of the opportunity to reach out to the girls.
In 2020, agents from the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) raided his home and found him downloading child pornography on his computer in the living room. During the raid, they also discovered that he was in a relationship with a 14-year-old minor.
When the verdict becomes final, the subject must be detained preventively for six months.
