Mr Emmanuelides explained that panic attacks occur twice as often in women as in men and 1.5 million Greeks experience one at least once in their lifetime.

Panic attacks are sudden, intense episodes of fear or anxiety accompanied by a range of physical symptoms.

“A panic attack is when a person has uncontrollable symptoms without realizing it. His hands sweat, he may feel dizzy, confused, which may cause him to lose consciousness. It happens suddenly. A panic attack is a special form of anxiety.”

Panic attacks can be triggered by a variety of factors, including stress, trauma, or a genetic predisposition to anxiety disorders.

“It has a beginning, middle and end. It starts after symptoms appear, peaks within 10 minutes and should last up to 30 minutes. It is important that the individual is in a safe environment and that the phenomenon will subside in that environment.”
