The Nepal Newspaper Union locked down the central office of the Newspaper Federation at 10:30 pm, saying that the federation’s membership dispute was not resolved through legal structure and it was heading towards elections with force, union secretary general Dilip Pod said.
Secretary General Poudel told Online News that “Nepal Patra Federation chapters and provinces finalized the membership allocation of the Federation.” However, the Centre deleted the recommendations sent by the district chapters, state chapters and foundation chapters, while non-journalists who were not recommended by any body were included in the voters list of the Federation’s election process and had to be locked in. He strongly condemned the incident and said that the lockout would continue as long as the policy of forcefully occupying the central leadership of the Federation is maintained.
Secretary General of the Union, Pudel, also warned that they would not participate in the federal elections until the membership disputes were resolved and urged them to adhere to the recommendations made by the federal regions, provinces and institutions. Once again, the Journalists Union is asked to adopt the recommendations made by the regions, provinces and institutions of the Journalists Union. But if we ignore the last request, we will not participate in the federal election process and we will launch a national campaign. “
He claimed that the former Presidents’ Steering Committee formed to conduct the Federation elections forgot their positions and attended a political party meeting and then returned to the Federation and tried to purge active journalists. He said: “Now a Steering Committee of former Presidents has been formed to conduct the Federation elections. The members of the said Board Committee forgot their positions and attended a political party meeting and from there took over the Federation and expelled active journalists. The Electoral Commission is trying to legitimize this act and we had to lock down the central office. .’
He alleged that Gobind Acharya, the Prime Minister’s Press Advisor and former Federation member, published the final list of the Federation in order to take over the Federation through the Home Ministry Directorate. It is wrong for the Election Commission to publish the voters’ list through the Home Ministry Directorate, ignoring the applications and complaints of active journalists from all over the country. The Newspaper Union strongly condemns this. The policy of occupying the Federation is something we will never accept and we will not accept it. We once again demand that the Federation maintain its membership through methods and procedures.
On June 9, he met the president and secretary general of the journalists union and submitted a memorandum with an ultimatum to redress the membership dispute within 24 hours and assured that the membership of the journalists union would be maintained the next day based on the complaint.
