In recent years, the Municipality of Glyfada has been using all modern means of protection with the latest technology, including a complete network of fixed fiber optic and thermal cameras that, through the use of artificial intelligence, can instantly detect smoke or fire with an accuracy of 98% and a height of 40 cm.
In fact, the mayor of Glyfada, Giorgos Papanikolaou, published photos of the first moments of the fire.
At the same time, water tanks were set up on the mountain, and the fire brigade’s helicopters took water from the tanks and carried out multiple rainfall operations in a timely manner.
Glyfada Mayor Giorgos Papanikolaou mentioned the preparedness and perfect coordination of the city’s fire brigade and civil protection. “All systems go, unless people help. Our civil protection staff and volunteers were patrolling in Imitos yesterday. Men and women from the fire department. People from ELAS and all other groups who are on the move every time. Our city’s civil protection teams and volunteers are patrolling 24 hours a day, using the municipality’s water tankers and fire trucks. Yesterday, before we even communicated with the civil protection teams and volunteers about the incident, they were on the scene immediately, because we had and still have patrols anyway,” the Glyfada mayor stressed in the post.
George Papanikolaou did not forget to mention those who once again tried to take advantage of the difficult situation of the municipality for personal advancement. “In moments of battle and crisis management, it is important to combine forces and work together to get the best results, without attempts of exploitation and personal advancement. This is what we always do, and we also follow every fire in other regions to help with the forces we have. We are very grateful to the volunteer groups of our own municipality and neighboring municipalities who participated.”
It is noteworthy that the Glyfada Municipality team identified the two men who set the fire and handed them over to the authorities.
