India Gate and the Department of Veterans Affairs are scheduled to hold a protest march today, starting from Hutatma Square and ending at India Gate.
The Mumbai Police has beefed up security to tackle the protest march by the Popular Front of India (MVA) following the toppling of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The Indian People’s Army will hold a protest march today, starting from Hutathma Square and ending at India Gate. Police and other security personnel have been stationed in various parts of the city to maintain order.
The 35-feet-tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg district collapsed on August 26. The statue was unveiled as part of the Navy Day celebrations on December 4 last year and this was the first time it was on display in Sindhudurg.
Criticising the BJP-led Mahayuti government for the statue collapse at Rajkot Fort last month, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said, “Two days ago, people saw the collapse of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and all the comments made at that time. Raj Bhavan is built on the seashore but not even the Governor’s hat was blown off. They say the statue collapsed due to strong winds – how is that possible?”
Young Congress leaders and other party members were detained by Mumbai Police on Friday while protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city, demanding a public apology from Modi over the toppling of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he bowed his head and apologized to the people of Maharashtra who were hurt by the toppling of the Sindhudurga Shivaji statue.
“I bow my head and apologize to those who considered Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a deity and were deeply hurt. Our values are different. For us, nothing is more important than our God,” PM Modi said, according to Indian news agency ANI.
Chetan Patil, the structural consultant of the collapsed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Malwan area of Sindhudurg, has been arrested in Kolhapur. According to the Sindhudurg police, an FIR has been filed under Sections 109, 110, 125, 318 and 3(5) of the Constitutional Court of India (BNS).
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Thursday that the state government is moving fast to rebuild the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Two committees have been set up, including one to investigate the collapse of the Malvan statue.
An official statement from the Indian Navy revealed that a joint technical committee led by the Indian Navy and including representatives of the Maharashtra government and technical experts is being set up to investigate the damage to the statue at Sindhudur Rajkot Fort. The investigation will take into account the adverse weather conditions that may have caused the accident.
