WASHINGTON, June 29 (AP): A minivan crashed into a Long Island nail salon on Friday, killing four people inside and injuring nine others, Suffolk County fire officials said.
The vehicle came to a stop behind the Hawaii Nail & Spa store in Deer Park around 4:40 p.m.
“There were people trapped. We got them out and took them to a local hospital,” Deer Park Fire Department Deputy Chief Dominic Albanese told reporters at the scene.
The driver was taken to a hospital in a semi-conscious state, Albanese said.
Officials said it was not clear whether the crash was accidental or intentional. A police spokesman said Suffolk County Police Department homicide detectives are investigating the matter.
Photos from the scene showed a large hole in the storefront at the shopping centre.
Eric Perez told Newsday he was loading groceries in his car across from the accident scene when he heard a car speed by and then a sound “like something breaking.”
“It was a sound I had never heard before,” he said.
He said as he and his wife left the parking lot, they saw rescue workers evacuating victims from the scene.
“We saw an ambulance and paramedics pulling out a body,” he said. “I also saw two women on stretchers, I think they were working there.”
Albanese said about 150 firefighters and medical personnel responded to the accident.
“It’s horrible. It’s tough on the community and the volunteer fire department,” he said. “But we’re going to get through this.”
