Milan’s main airport is to be renamed after former Italian Prime Minister and businessman Silvio Berlusconi. Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini announced the news today. The Civil Aviation Authority approved a request from the Lombardy region to rename Milan Malpensa Airport to Milan Malpensa Airport in honor of Berlusconi, who hails from the financial metropolis.
“Since the final decision lies with the transport minister, I think the name change will happen,” said Matteo Salvini, leader of the right-wing ruling League party and a longtime ally of Berlusconi. Berlusconi, who died last year at the age of 86, led four governments under his center-right Forza Italia party and was one of Italy’s most controversial figures.
“In memory of my friend Silvio, a great businessman, a great Milanese citizen and a great Italian,” Salvini wrote on Twitter, with a photo of Berlusconi and Malpensa Airport. Milan also has the smaller Linate city airport.
