“I left when I saw that the new government was causing great damage to Montenegrin interests. I thought it was a passing phase, but as time went on, everything got worse, there was no seriousness, no state order, no idea of development in Montenegro. Everything became relativized in the country, there were no European and civil society standards. So the reason for leaving the Democratic Party was the consequence of the new government’s policies, and at the same time the opposition and the Democratic Party did not find a way out at that time,” said Markovic from Gradska.
He announced that he would run as an independent.
“This decision of ours is not the result of our selfishness or even of some kind of political passion. I just think it is fair and honest to participate in the elections, see if citizens recognize you, if citizens trust you, and then if you gain this trust, actively participate in the political and public life of Montenegro, whether it is at the local level or at the parliamentary level. It is in our interest to be a politically strong player in the political and public space of Montenegro,” Markovic said, adding that they do not want to hide behind any alliance.
Asked if they would form an alliance with the Democratic Party or some entities of the so-called August Majority, Malkovich said dialogue should not be avoided.
“When it comes to the interests of Montenegro, every political entity that has legitimacy, that has parliamentarians and representatives cannot and should not escape from the dialogue with all political entities that are actors of the Council list or the Parliament list, because the greatest public interest that will contribute to the solution of the problem should be determined,” he stressed.
For them, their partners will be parties that inherit anti-fascist and liberal values, individual freedoms and civil liberties, he added.
“Parties that do not deny war crimes wherever they occurred, and especially those that do not glorify these war criminals. These are natural partners and whether these future partners are compatible, we are ready to negotiate. We do not want to be with those who want political monopoly and power at all costs. We cannot work with a party if its leader is blacklisted by an EU country,” Markovic pointed out.
He also believes there is political persecution in Montenegro.
“Veselin Veljovic was arrested in connection with a verdict that was announced and has been detained for a year. Arrested and asked for evidence. This is impossible in EU countries, there are no arrests to obtain evidence. You can’t arrest people without evidence. I think there is also political persecution here. I am considering suing, I think this is revenge and whoever is guilty must answer,” said Markovic.
