Luis Suarez leads Uruguay to third place at Copa America
Suarez scored the equaliser and the decisive penalty in the shootout
Forward Luis Suarez was the man of the match at U.S. Bank Stadium in Charlotte, South Carolina, on Saturday as he helped Uruguay come back from a 2-1 deficit in stoppage time to send their Copa America third-place match with Canada to a penalty shootout, where he also scored the decisive goal as the South Americans won 4-3.
Rodrigo Bentancur gave Uruguay the lead just eight minutes into the game, but Ismael Kone equalized the score at 1-1 in the 21st minute, after which Canada established a territorial advantage. Despite this, Uruguay had Facundo Pellistri’s goal disallowed by VAR (video assisted refereeing).
After the half-time break, Uruguay’s Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa sent on Suarez and other substitutes, which was crucial to the team’s victory.
Canada’s advantage began to emerge with 10 minutes left in regulation, as forward Jonathan David seized on the rebound of Koné’s shot in the box, and before Suárez chipped in, Concacaf looked set to claim victory.
Canada’s goals in the shootout were scored by Jonathan David, Moïse Bombito and Mathieu Choinière, while Ismaël Koné and Alphonso Davies missed chances. Uruguay’s goals were scored by Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Luis Suárez.
Defending champions Argentina, which features Lionel Messi, will play Colombia in the final on Sunday in Miami Gardens.
