Liverpool called for an investigation after one of their Under-18 players complained about being subjected to racist comments during a match in Germany on Sunday.

“We call on our opponents and tournament organisers to urgently and thoroughly investigate these facts.”exhorted Liverpool in a press release.

In the Bundesliga Cup games against Hoffenheim on Friday and Frankfurt on Saturday, the young Reds left the pitch after a player said he was subjected to racist comments.

“A player from our under-18 team reported to us that he was subjected to racist comments during Friday’s Bundesliga Cup match in Schwabisch Hall, Germany”denoting clubs from the north of England.

“The player immediately alerted the referee, teammates and staff, who decided the team should leave the court.”the club continued in its press release.

“We are proud of our player who made the right decision and showed maturity by reporting this incident”indicating the club.

In a column for German newspaper Bild, Frankfurt sporting director Timo Hardung said he took the matter “seriously” and referred to a linguistic misunderstanding caused by the use of a word that is common in Germany but could cause confusion.

“We can remove racism from this story, it was a language issue so I hope we can sort this misunderstanding out with the players and Liverpool management.” He added.
