Kailali, July 20. Birma Gurung of Tikapur went to the local administration office in Tikapur with her daughter-in-law last Friday. She complained that her granddaughter could not breastfeed for five hours as there was no breastfeeding room in the administration.

“We went there for a special job, and customers swarmed in, and the baby had no place to feed,” said Wilma. “The nearby snack bar was also crowded, and the nanny couldn’t feed for five hours. It was very painful for several hours.”

Rima Thapa of Tikapur arrived at Tikapur Hospital with her four-month-old baby on Thursday morning. The child waited in line for hours to get treatment. She could not feed her baby easily as there were hundreds of patients in the hospital and no breastfeeding room. She said Mazetro came around the corner and hesitated to take the milk from Nani.

Nutritionists recommend that babies should be fed with milk continuously for six months. Even after six months, breast milk and nutritious food should be compulsorily fed for two years. Meena Tamta, a women health volunteer from Tikapur-8, teaches newborns about breastfeeding, she said.

Public Health Inspector of Satti Sahari Health Centre said mothers were facing difficulties as there was no breastfeeding room in the Himal Sarumgar health facility. Lactating mothers need a comfortable environment. He insisted on creating a place where mothers can easily pump milk anywhere, be it office, organization or home.

Breastfeeding rooms have been built at two places, Tikapur Municipal Office and Vijayanagar City Health Centre. Bal Bahadur Rawal, head of Tikapur Municipal Health Department, said these breastfeeding rooms are used only occasionally. “Not only health facilities, but every office where clients come has a breastfeeding room,” he said.

Tikapur Municipal Corporation chief Ramlal Dagaura Tharu said that while there was no breastfeeding room in the old building, the new building will have one.
