MP Valdemaras Varkiunas has decided to leave the Labour faction in parliament. With his departure, the Labour Party no longer has the seven members needed to form a faction.
The announcement was made by Paulius Saudargas, deputy chairman of the parliament, at the beginning of the parliamentary session on Tuesday. According to him, V. Valkiūnas decided to join the mixed group of Seimas members.
Currently, there are seven MPs in the Labor caucus, which is the minimum number required to form a caucus.
V. Valkiūnas also pledged to quit the party ranks: There is a limit to when you have to say “stop” to yourself
Explaining his decision, Erte V. Varkiunas said there had been a sense of stagnation among the ranks of “workers” recently and a lack of political ambition.
“Commander Andrius Mazuronis escaped, as they say. Without leadership, there is no cohesion, no work, no results. To always sit at the bottom of the second coalition and be an outsider – what’s the point?” he asked rhetorically, stressing that he had also pledged to quit the Labour Party.
Asked about the collapse of factions, the MP did not rule out that the “workers” could find new people to convince to join the group of MPs.
“Maybe you’ll find something else. But as they say, I procrastinated for a few years.” There’s also a limit to when you need to tell yourself to “stop,” he teaches.
However, the MP was reluctant to talk about future political plans and did not answer whether he intends to join any other political party. However, it has been confirmed that V. Valkiūnas will participate in the parliamentary elections to be held in the fall.
A. Mazuronis assesses the situation: He is a political clown
Commenting on his colleague’s decision to destroy the faction, former Labor Party chairman Andrius Mazuronis did not hide his surprise. According to him, V. Valkiūnas supported the idea of not merging with the Lithuanian Party of Regions at the Labor Party Council meeting held on Monday.
“Valkiunas will go down in history as having destroyed the Labour Party, and possibly the party. You will be able to shine in another faction with your brilliant, hard-to-review speeches. One continues to play the role of a clown,” A. Mazuronis told Eltai.
“Valkiunas explained at yesterday’s council meeting how much he loves the party and how no one should join here. But today he made such a decision. How can you comment on a person who says one thing in the evening and another in the morning?” A. Mazuronis added.
V. Bukauskas: He could at least have informed about the withdrawal
The former elder of the Labor faction in parliament, Valentinas Bukauskas, assured that this move by V. Valkiūnas was unexpected.
“I learned about the decision when I arrived at the congress chamber. In the morning, he was not in the team,” V. Bukauskas told Elta.
“Yesterday at the council meeting his statement about the Labour Party was we have to work, we have to leave, we have to make a decision and today his decision has been that. It was unexpected, to be honest, it was informative at the very least,” he added.
Currently, the politician and other “workers” assure that they intend to work in a mixed group of MPs.
“Time will tell what we’re going to do next. Let’s not touch the hot potato, as they say, and let’s wait for things to cool down. And, I think everything will come together,” he assured.
The Labour Party has been in trouble lately. After the defeat in the presidential and European Parliament elections, Andrius Mazuronis resigned as party chairman. Valentinas Bukauskas temporarily assumed leadership of the party. A few months ago, members of Parliament Vigilius Jukna and Ieva Kačinskaitė-Urbonienė, as well as Viktoras Fiodorovs after the European Parliament elections, also made the decision to leave the Labour Party.
The “Darbić” parliament began to consider the possibility of joining the Lithuanian Party of Regions, but on Monday decided to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections independently, without joining forces with any political forces.
The Labour Party is also involved in a pre-trial investigation into the illegal acquisition of more than 500,000 euros in EU budget funds. Back in April, the Financial Crime Investigation Agency (FCSI) reported that the Labour Party headquarters had been searched. The ongoing investigation is related to a person who served as an advisor to a member of the European Parliament.
The founder of the political force, MEP Viktor Uspaskich, suspended his membership in the “Workers” ranks after the party headquarters were searched.
