Former KABC Los Angeles executive Tom Van Amburg dies at 83.
Van Amburg died on Monday, June 24, at his home in Los Angeles following a brief illness.
Van Amburg’s other children include Zack Van Amburg, head of global video for Apple TV+, and Chris Van Amburg, head of marketing.
Van Amberg is best known for his role as Los Angeles General Manager of ABC’s flagship O&O station KABC-TV, where he played a key role in making the Los Angeles station the highest-rated local news organization at the time. During his tenure, he led the station to high ratings and was involved in leading programming innovations, including Los Angeles in the morning Partnered with Regis Philbin, which later became Live with Regis and Kathie Lee Before Kelly Ripa took over as co-host Living with Regis and Kelly. The show is now Live with Kelly and Mark. Other programs include afternoon talk shows 330 and Focus on Los AngelesUnder his leadership, legendary Southern California broadcasters Jerry Dunphy, Christine Lund, Paul Moyer and Chuck Henry were hired.
Van Amberg briefly ran KCBS-TV, with KCBS News veteran Don Dunkel serving as acting news director. He later served as CEO of Vanamedia and its subsidiary production company Tri-Crown Productions.
Van Amberg also made his voice heard on the airwaves, using his style and weekly editorials. He brought the 1984 Olympics to Los Angeles on KABC-TV, hosting the following specials: Arena Arenatracing the historic Los Angeles venue’s roots in Rome. He also hosted Anonymous witnessdescribing local criminals, with each segment ending with his signature catchphrase, “Turn ’em in!”
In addition to running KABC-TV in Los Angeles, Van Amburg has worked at radio stations and ABC O&O stations in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. His brother, former TV news anchor Fred Van Amburg, worked at KGO-TV in San Francisco in the 1970s and 1980s, where he was known as Van Amburg.
Van Amburgh is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Zach, Chris and Arden; and six grandchildren.
