(Jamaica Observer) KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica issued a hurricane warning at 10:00 a.m. Monday as fierce Hurricane Beryl barreled toward the Caribbean Sea.
Jamaica’s Met Service issued the warning via social media, noting that the updated warning means the country could begin to experience hurricane-related conditions within the next 48 hours.
“Hurricane Beryl is now moving into the eastern Caribbean Sea and will strike Jamaica on Wednesday,” the weather service said.
Hurricane Beryl strengthened into an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane early Monday and headed towards St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami said.
The National Hurricane Center said in its latest bulletin that data from hurricane hunter aircraft indicated the storm had strengthened and life-threatening winds and storm surge were expected to affect the Windward Islands beginning Monday morning.
The hurricane, the first named hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, has maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (mph) and a forward speed of 20 mph.
