The Israeli military said on Monday it was advancing further south and west of Gaza City, putting at risk the indirect negotiation process for a ceasefire and a Palestinian prisoner exchange.
Israeli troops arrive at the headquarters of the United Nations refugee agency UNRWA. The project is not in use due to the war. The military said the armed forces have launched a counter-terrorism operation in the area. The army asked civilians to leave the area before the operation began.
Army Radio reported fighting with Islamist Hamas militants. Palestinian hospitals said at least 15 people had been killed. The number of victims was likely to rise as the fighting prevented rescue workers from reaching many residential areas. The information could not be independently verified.
Hamas statement said the group’s Foreign Minister Ismail Haniyeh warned Qatari and Egyptian mediators that Israeli military actions in Gaza City could lead to a breakdown in ongoing negotiations.
The Israeli army has repeatedly attacked the city, located in the northern part of the blockaded coastal zone, during the Gaza war. Nevertheless, residents of the affected neighborhoods were shocked by the nighttime raids. According to a DPA reporter, they spoke of a “night of terror.”
In southern Lebanon, the Israeli military killed a fighter from the Shiite militia Hezbollah in a targeted airstrike. Hezbollah said the man was hit by a drone while riding a motorcycle in the Tyre district.
The Israeli army confirmed the targeted killing. The attacker was a cadre of Hezbollah’s rocket force, said to have been involved in many attacks on Israel.
The war was triggered by an unprecedented massacre in southern Israel by terrorists from Hamas and other Palestinian extremist groups on October 7 last year. Since then, Hezbollah has been bombarding northern Israel with rockets and other projectiles – in “solidarity” with Hamas, as it claims.
