Isle of Man Government – Power outage preparations

The Isle of Man Care Centre is preparing for the next phase of its ongoing programme to upgrade the electrical infrastructure at Noble Hospital, which will see the replacement of electrical switchgear installed when the hospital was built.

The next phase of upgrades will result in complete power outages in three different areas of the hospital during three different periods:

  • Monday, June 24 – 9pm to 1am
  • Thursday, June 27 – 9pm to 1am
  • Monday, July 1 – 9pm to 1am

During these planned outages, the affected service area will be completely without power, with temporary lighting and power for essential equipment being provided by external generators. We have also leased a mobile CT scanner to ensure imaging services supporting the emergency department can continue during the outage.

“We have been planning for these outages over several months in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure, with contingency plans in place for each affected area to ensure services are not interrupted and patient safety is protected at all times. The outages will be managed as ‘major incidents’ with a full incident command team in place throughout the outage to ensure any issues can be responded to and disruption to patient care is minimised.”

Anyone visiting the hospital during a power outage should be aware that in the days and hours before each outage there will be an increased number of engineers on wards and departments as temporary cabling and lighting are installed. Please also pay particular attention to the additional tripping hazards that may be caused by temporary cabling and lighting in affected wards and corridors.

Oliver Radford, Executive Director of the Health Service, said:

“We thank our patients and visitors for their patience and understanding during the upcoming works to upgrade Noble Hospital’s electrical infrastructure. While disruptive, the upgrades will ensure resilient and reliable power supply throughout the hospital for the next two decades and beyond, reducing the risk of future power outages and more severe impacts on service delivery.”
