Isle of Man Government – Over 2,000 operations have been carried out as part of the R&R programme

More than 2,000 patients underwent surgery between August 2022 and May 2023, treating those who had to wait a long time for treatment.

since Manx Care’s Recovery and Resilience (R&R) Programme More than 3,000 surgical procedures have been performed, more than 1,000 diagnostic tests have been performed, and more than 1,000 outpatient appointments have been scheduled.

In October 2022, the R&R programme received £18.3 million of government funding to provide a dedicated service to reduce long waiting lists, one of the actions identified in the Island Plan, which has been further impacted by the covid-19 pandemic.

The funding will be used to increase the existing capacity at the Isle of Man Care Centre and bring in more teams to perform surgeries, treatments and consultations, in partnership with UK provider Synaptik, alongside Noble Hospital’s existing surgical team.

Phase 2 of the R&R program runs from August 2022 to May 2023 and has successfully continued to reduce wait times for multiple surgeries.

This phase focuses on orthopaedics, ophthalmology and general surgery. In addition to surgery, Manx Care and Synaptik also provide treatment and consultation.

A detailed update on the scheme will be published before the Tynwald Council meeting in October, outlining how much money has been spent on the scheme, the number of surgeries being carried out and current waiting times.

The latest news showcases the success of Phase II, with cataract hospital wait lists reduced by 79%, orthopedic hospital wait lists reduced by 37%, and general surgery hospital wait lists reduced by 23%.

The reduction in waiting times may fluctuate in the coming months as the program moves into the next phase, which is to provide treatment for patients with complex conditions and those who cannot undergo surgery in a shorter time frame.

Manx Care will continue to work with patients to ensure they receive treatment as early as possible to maximise the number of patients that can benefit from this campaign.
