Around 101 new shopping centres are set to open in South Africa over the next three years, with some already under construction and others in the early planning stages.

In my community in northern Johannesburg, there are 4 Woolworths food stores within a 7km radius. In the same radius, there are 2 Clicks pharmacies, 2 Pick n Pays and 2 Spars.
Most of these retailers are located on high streets, with shops arranged in rows, making it easy to get in and out without having to navigate a maze of car parks. Some of the shops within the 7km radius are located in two large shopping malls, and to reach them you need to navigate through several levels of paid parking and are more likely to forget where you parked your car.
An oversupply of retail space is good for competition and for consumers, who have more choices. However, I have often wondered if these stores, being so close to each other and located in the same area, can be profitable.
