After Pakistan suffered a crushing defeat to first-time participant United States in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup on Thursday, former captain Inzaman-ul-Haq said high scores and high wicket-taking will boost the national team’s confidence against India.
The United States will face a strong Indian team in a thrilling World Cup match on June 9 in New York.
Inzaman, in a video shared on his official YouTube channel, made an important statement about the expected performance of the Pakistan team in the match against their arch-rivals.
“If our batsmen score high and bowlers take wickets, we will go into the match against India with full confidence. India will go into the match with high morale but Pakistan will not. The match against the USA is very important for us,” he said.
The former cricketer said Pakistan cricket was heading for “decline”.
“Babar Azam and his team should sit down and think about what kind of cricket they are playing. But, looking at our cricket and selection, I think our cricket is going down the drain,” the former right-hander said.
The match between Pakistan and the United States ended in a draw after 20 overs each, but Pakistan failed to chase 19 runs in the super innings and lost the match by 5 runs.
Pakistan had set a target of 160 when batting first, but the Americans equalised the score in the last ball of the innings, ending the innings at 159-3.
In his post-match speech, Babar said they failed to score in the power play.
“In the first six overs, we failed to capitalise on our chances. Losing runs in a row always puts you at a disadvantage and as a batsman you need to step up your attack and build partnerships,” he said.
Babar mentioned that the same thing happened with the ball as well while stressing that spinners were unable to take wickets.
“We didn’t perform well in the first six innings. Our spinners also didn’t take wickets in the middle innings, so these things cost us,” he added.
“A lot of credit to the US team, they played better than us in three areas. The pitch was a bit damp and it was two-speed. As a professional you need to assess the situation,” he concluded.
