India will not host the Women’s T20 World Cup in October if its venue has to be moved from Bangladesh, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has said.
Earlier this month, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India after weeks of deadly anti-government protests.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) said it was “closely monitoring developments in the country”, which will host the cricket tournament from October 3 to 20.
Shah said the International Cricket Council had asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India if it could host the tournament, but he had “categorically refused”.
“We are still in the monsoon season and we will host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year,” Shah told Times of India.
“I don’t want to give the impression that I want to host back-to-back World Cups.”
Weeks of student demonstrations in Bangladesh, initially in protest against quotas for civil service jobs, have left more than 400 people dead.
The International Cricket Council said it was working with the Bangladesh Cricket Board and independent security advisers to assess the situation.
The Women’s T20 World Cup will feature 10 teams, including England and Scotland, in 23 matches and will be held in the capital Dhaka and Sylhet.
Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates are potential alternative hosts if the tournament has to be moved.
