On Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 5:30 pm, the exhibition “Between History and Memory” will be opened at the Art Gallery of San Francesco, in the presence of His Excellency the Regent Captain General. “Incunabula of San Marino”. The temporary exhibition is curated by the Institute of Culture of the Republic of San Marino – State Library and the University of the Republic of San Marino – University Library.

The exhibition is intended to be the highlight of a series of research projects that were recently launched, which involve the valuation of the ancient and local collections of the two library institutions.

In 2021, the State and University Libraries join an important census project on incunabula (printed books published before 1500), edited by Prof. Marco Palma and Dr. Paola Errani of Viella Publishing House. This project concerns the territory of San Marino and has two main objectives: to describe the ancient books preserved in San Marino and to publicize and evaluate this outstanding part of the ancient book heritage of our Republic.

The exhibition itinerary of the exhibition “Between History and Memory. Incunabula in San Marino” will feature 32 ancient volumes: a manuscript, 28 books printed in the 15th century, two volumes published in the 16th century and one published in the 18th century.

For the first time, ancient editions from the State Library will be exhibited together; these are volumes of jurisprudence and Latin literature, enriched with signs and handwritten annotations referring to people and places from the history of San Marino. Old books from the University Library, part of the Youth Fund, also deal with the ancient art of memory through rich and complex illustrations.

The exhibition will be open until September 8th.
