Scope and Definitions – Goods consumption expenditure conforms to the national accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, goods consumption expenditure accounted for nearly half of total household consumption expenditure. Goods consumption expenditure is divided into three main categories:

– Food: agricultural, forestry and fishery products (AZ), food, beverages and tobacco (C1);

– Energy: mineral products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coking products (C2);

– Engineering products: computers, electronic, electrical and optical products (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, leather products, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastics, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Under this heading there are “durable” goods, including transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durables (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

Finished products correspond to all products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.

Source – The indicator is a compilation of various statistics published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Consumer Price Index, Turnover Index and Scanner data), the Bank of France, the French Automobile Manufacturers Association (CCFA), the Data and Statistical Research Department (SDES), the French Fashion Institute (IFM), the National Health Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Federation of the Rubber and Plastics Industry (SNCP), the Petroleum Committee (CPDP), GFK, Logista, the International Automobile and Motorcycle Federation Committee (CSIAM) and others.
