The Telecommunications Commission of the Solomon Islands (TCSI) has formally granted a Class License to Starlink Solomon Islands Limited, enabling the company to provide telecommunications services throughout the country.
The historic agreement was signed by TCSI Commissioner Calvin Ziru and Starlink Solomon Islands Limited Senior Executive Ryan Goodnight at TCSI’s offices in Alvaro House, Honiara.
Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX subsidiary Starlink Services, LLC, providing high-speed internet via a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites.
Owned by American entrepreneur Elon Musk, Starlink currently serves 102 countries, providing widespread and affordable connectivity.
Commissioner Qi Lu spoke of the significance of this development for the Solomon Islands, noting that the introduction of Starlink will improve internet accessibility and affordability for the population.
“Starlink’s telecommunications services provided through its low-Earth orbit satellites allow for more powerful and faster connections. Starlink’s scale enables them to offer a wide range of services at the lowest possible price,” Ziru said.
Addressing concerns about the impact on existing providers Solomon Telekom and Bemobile, Ziru assured the public that the arrival of Starlink will bring healthy competition that will ultimately benefit consumers. He also said that smaller Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will have the opportunity to take advantage of Starlink’s services.
