Saint Lucia’s first female police chief, Cruscita Descartes-Pelius, was appointed in 2022 (albeit in an “acting” capacity). The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) was established in 1834, nearly 200 years ago.
In October 2022, Prime Minister Philippe J. Pierre announced Descartes-Pelléus as taking the position, saying her training and 34 years of service prepared her for the role at a time when the region is facing a number of security threats, especially gun violence. (The latter remains a troubling issue.)
Descartes-Pellius joined the police force in 1988, was promoted to sergeant in 2001 and superintendent in 2015.
Prior to her appointment as Police Commissioner, she served as Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Corporate Services and Strategic Operations.
She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from the University of the West Indies.
So yes, Descartes-Pelleius had enough qualifications—at least on paper.
Her appointment opens up all sorts of possibilities, and it’s fair to say that the police chief, who retires tomorrow, did try to push for change.
She took many initiatives and not only walked the talk, but also walked the talk.
Although Descartes-Pelleius claimed that she meant business and that “we will oppose this wrongdoing,” some disagreed.
Descartes-Pelleius, at least on the surface, might come across as timid.
Can this police chief really convince criminals and law-abiding citizens alike that she is the right person for the job?
Social media sites like Facebook have been full of suggestions for this and many local radio shows have captured this as well.
People express their hesitations and concerns through talk shows, and this is reflected in everyday conversations.
But despite facing harsh criticism and considerable trials, Descartes-Pelleius continued to serve with gusto.
Reflecting on her achievements this week, the commissioner, who was reinstated in 2023, said that when she returns to the leadership of the RSLPF, one of her responsibilities will be to “provide training to senior police officers and develop strong leadership in the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.”
“My goal has always been to develop the men and women who serve with me into leaders, and I believe I have accomplished that,” she said.
Yes, Descartes-Pelius stands.
As for whether she would be willing to extend her contract if given the chance, the police chief simply said, “I don’t want to comment on that right now.”
But whether she returns or not, we wish this COP all the best. Like many people, we are waiting for news about the next COP, and more importantly, we are curious whether this COP will operate efficiently and even exceed expectations.
But one thing is certain, as Prime Minister Pierre said, this is a “historic moment for women”.
Despite often being undermined, many women continue to excel in their respective fields.
But whether the top police officer is a man or a woman, we will fully support him!
