Susan Wojcickiformer CEO Youtube One of Google’s first employees after its founding in 1998 has died. He was 56.
Her husband, Dennis Tropper, announced Facebook Wojcicki died Friday evening after a two-year battle with non-small cell lung cancer. He wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Susan Wojcicki. My beloved wife of 26 years and mother of our five children left us today after a two-year battle with non-small cell lung cancer.”
Tropper continued in the post: “Susan was not only my best friend and companion throughout my life, she was a brilliant mind, a loving mother, and a dear friend to many. Her impact on our family and the world is immeasurable. We are heartbroken but grateful for the time we had with her. Please remember us as a family as we go through this difficult time.”
Wojcicki revealed in February 2023 that she Step down She stepped down from YouTube after nine years leading the Google-owned company, saying in a letter to employees at the time that she was leaving to “start a new chapter and focus on my family, my health, and my passionate personal projects.”
The former executive was Google’s 16th employee hired, originally joining the company in 1999 (which was co-founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin the year before) to build its advertising business and analytics products. She moved on to the CEO role at YouTube after Google acquired the video platform in 2014.
Under Wojcicki’s leadership, YouTube grew into one of the leading social and video platforms for digital creators, enabling them to monetize their content through the company’s YouTube Partner Program. YouTube also launched its own Short video productsShorts, competing with TikTok.
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai paid tribute to Wojcicki at X, formerly Twitter. writing“I am devastated to lose my dear friend @SusanWojcicki after a two-year battle with cancer. She was a central figure in Google’s history and it’s hard to imagine the world without her. She was an incredible person, leader, and friend who had an enormous impact on the world, and I am one of countless Googlers who is a better person for having known her. She will be deeply missed. Our hearts are with her family. R.I.P. Susan.”
Wojcicki was born on July 5, 1968 in Santa Clara, California, and was raised by his father, Stanley Wojcicki (died in May 2023), a physics professor at Stanford University, and his mother, Esther Wojcicki, a teacher and journalist.
She later continued her education through much of the 1990s, studying history and literature at Harvard University (B.A., 1990), economics at UC Santa Cruz (M.S., 1993), and business at UCLA (M.B.A., 1998).
Prior to joining the Google team, she worked at Intel, Bain & Company, and RB Webber.
In addition to Troper and Esther, Wojcicki has five other children.
