The Information Centre of Afghanistan expressed concern about the detention of journalists and media workers in the country and called on the Taliban to immediately release the four journalists still held by the group.
Somayeh Valizadeh, chairman of the center’s communications and publicity committee, told Radio Azadi on Thursday that the arrests of journalists violated the mass media law. He continued:
“The Afghan Journalism Center calls for the unconditional release of these journalists and their return to media work. These arrests have caused many journalists to leave journalism or be forced to self-censor.”
Ms. Walizadeh said the Taliban is trying to control and monopolize the media in Afghanistan by arresting journalists and putting pressure on the media.
Among the four journalists still in Taliban custody are Sayed Rahim Saeedi, managing director and producer of a media content production channel, who was arrested by Taliban intelligence in Kabul on September 24, and Mohammad Ibrahim Mohtaj, a local journalist in Kabul. Arrested in Kandahar According to the Afghanistan News Center, he was arrested by employees of the Kandahar Provincial Department of Prevention of Good and Evil on August 6 after leaving his office.
The Taliban has not yet commented on the arrest of the journalist.
Officials from the group have previously said they are committed to maintaining media and journalist freedom within the framework of Islamic law and national interests.
The Taliban has detained dozens of journalists and media workers in Afghanistan over the past three years, many of whom were released after a period of time.
