The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly has received a petition from community members calling for the repeal or reduction of VSAT licence fees and the approval of Starlink domestic tariffs. The petition, signed by 2,416 individuals and initiated by MLA Roger Spink, reflects the community’s strong desire for improved internet and telecommunications services.
The MPs have endorsed the petition and expressed their appreciation for the community’s active participation in the democratic process. The petition highlights the community’s great interest and concerns about current internet regulations.
“We welcome this petition and the engagement it represents,” said Council President, Councilman Jack Ford. “It is critical that the community’s voice is heard and that we are committed to making meaningful progress in improving internet and telecommunications services for all residents.”
“Members of the Legislative Assembly and Falkland Islands Government officials have been working hard to explore all available options to ensure that internet and telecommunications infrastructure meets the needs of all people in the Falkland Islands, as outlined in our March statement on priority work streams (telecommunications and hydrocarbons). This petition is a valuable contribution to that work.”
Once the petition is received, it will be presented to the Legislative Assembly on July 25, and MPs will then consider and discuss the terms of the petition in a select committee proceeding.
The Legislative Assembly expressed its gratitude to those who participated in the petition and encouraged them to continue their engagement and dialogue to work towards the best outcome for the community.
