The decision comes in the wake of a diplomatic crisis between Germany and Turkey caused by Turkish footballer Mehrich Demiral celebrating with the characteristic Grey Wolf salute during a match against Austria.
Mr. Erdogan’s visit to Berlin was announced by the president of the neighboring country in order to get the Turkish president to support the Turkish national team, precisely because the football player’s actions caused a reaction in Germany.
Earlier, the Turkish ambassador to Berlin was summoned to the Federal Foreign Office in response to the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s corresponding action yesterday (3/7) against the German ambassador to Ankara. Previously, the Turkish government had accused Germany of “xenophobia”.
The Grey Wolves are considered “extreme right-wing” by German authorities and are monitored by the Federal Agency for the Protection of the Constitution, with many politicians insisting on banning the group, as happened in Austria in 2019.
