It’s worth mentioning that Trump and Biden are equally weak in some ways, and I agree with the Biden team’s complaints about media coverage. Trump is also really old! He also has trouble speaking coherently and can’t climb stairs well! But “look, they’re both old” is hardly a reason for Biden to continue running. In fact, it’s the strongest reason to make someone else, almost anyone else, the candidate. Trump’s decline in ability compared to any other candidate is obvious. His unpopularity will rise overwhelmingly. He doesn’t stand a chance.

Biden obviously realizes this, and now Trump is the oldest presidential candidate in American history. The Democratic Party’s greatest liability — the age of its candidate — is now one of many factors that weigh down the Republican candidate. Want a reason not to vote for Trump? You have several. He will be older than Biden is now at the end of his term. He’s a convicted felon. He’s a liar. He’s been convicted of sexual assault. He’s presiding over the most chaotic and incompetent presidential administration in American history. The risk of global conflict will soar. He’ll reward dictators and authoritarians of all stripes. He’ll use the presidency to enrich himself and his family. He’s surrounded himself with right-wing ghouls. He’s planning to deport 10 million people. He’s Donald Trump, for God’s sake. (How did we get to this point again?)

For a month, the case has been undermined by entirely legitimate concerns about Biden’s fitness for office. But Harris needn’t worry. She’s been vice president for nearly four years and is well-equipped for the job. As a campaigner, she can make the case — especially lately — that Trump poses a unique threat to the country.
