The “fundamental idea” of the violent right is that “white Christian males in America are facing a cultural and demographic threat… and that Donald Trump will protect their way of life.” In 2019, former Cato scholar Will Wilkinson (who was later fired for speaking the truth about political violence) wrote
“The U.S. parties are now relatively cleanly divided,” with internal immigration and self-selection creating Trump’s America: “a zero-sum, ethnocentric mentality that embraces populist rhetoric that blames threats from ‘un-American’ immigrants, minorities and liberal elites.” A 2017 Reuters/Ipsos survey Establishment
More than a third of American adults agree that “white people are currently under attack in this country.”
This mentality is disturbing, but I believe we will overcome it. America is better than Putin and Trump think. Every patriot who values America’s soul will stand with Harris against these slanders.
I am among them. I am a real American. I was born here, a child of immigrants. America, to me, is a place where Michelle can marry Rolf. Michelle is Jewish, her grandparents fled the Holocaust. Rolf is a war refugee from Germany, his aunt and uncle were Nazis. My parents met in graduate school at UC, I was born in Oakland—simple biological facts that apply to the vice president, too. If Trump 2024 suggests that Harris is not American, they are effectively denying my American identity.
