On Wednesday, August 17, Kenneth James (51), a Dominican national from Roseau, was arrested and arraigned before U.S. District Court Judge George W. Cannon on charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
According to the court’s charges against James, on August 15, 2017, he attempted to sell someone approximately 12 kilograms (26.4 pounds) of a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine. He was subsequently detained by police. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be at least $400,000. The case is being investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigrid M. Trejo-Sprot is prosecuting the case. If James is convicted, he could face not less than 10 years in prison or life in prison and a $10 million fine under U.S. Virgin Islands laws regarding conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine.
James is expected to appear in court again on Thursday.
