St. Joseph Dominican (TDN)
– The St. Joseph Magistrates Court in Dominica has sentenced a young man to four years in prison for his alleged role in the massive looting that took place in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. TDN was unable to verify the man’s identity, but Dominica reports that he admitted to robbing the Fine Foods warehouse in Jimmitte, where police allegedly found solar panels, batteries and other looted goods on his person. He is the second person sentenced in two weeks for similar crimes. Previously, a young man in Portsmouth was sentenced to three years of hard labor after police claimed to have found items allegedly looted on his person. Some in Dominica have decried the speed with which looters were brought to court and the severity of the sentence. Some are concerned that prosecutors may be biased and targeted as hundreds of people were randomly involved in the massive looting. In the five days after Hurricane Maria, hundreds of people looted a string of local businesses in the capital, including Roseau, while police stood by and did nothing.
Police have issued multiple warrants over the past two weeks in an attempt to arrest those they believe are responsible for the looting.
