Thailand’s populist Pheu Thai Party said on Thursday (August 15, 2024) that it would nominate its leader, Pathumdan Shinawatra, to be the country’s new leader in the parliamentary election, after former Prime Minister Prime Minister Sreeta Tawesin was sacked Pursuant to a court order for ethical violations.

Padongdan is the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is seen as a backer of the Pheu Thai Party. He is the first politician in Thai history to win an absolute majority of seats. Thaksin’s residual influence is also a factor in Padongdan’s support.

If Ms. Padongdan’s nomination is approved by the Thai parliament, which is scheduled to vote on Friday (August 16, 2024), she will become Thailand’s second female prime minister and the third Thai leader from the Shinawatra family, following her father and aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
