After a terrorist attack was allegedly foiled in Vienna, there are renewed calls for measures to monitor messenger services. “Terrorists do not communicate by letter,” which is why “the police need modern tools,” Interior Minister Gerhard Kanna (ÖVP) said today.
Styrian Premier Christoph Drexler (ÖVP) accuses Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens) of obstructing reforms. The Greens take their turn at the Ministry of the Interior.
Drexler: Zadich must ‘take responsibility seriously’
The Styrian governor explained that he had “asked Zadic to close this obvious security gap in Austria in November 2023” but had received no response and criticized Drexler. Zadic must “finally take his responsibility seriously” and act.

Greens see Home Office request

Khanna was asked to “come up with a proposal that will not be overturned by the Constitutional Court again, like a federal Trojan horse implemented by the Black and Blue for mass surveillance of the population.”
The Ministry of Interior, not the Ministry of Justice, has legal responsibility for regulations of the National Security and Intelligence Service (DSN). “The ÖVP should have known this,” it said.
