In a recent Samoa News article, ASG welcomes generous donation to local health services, it was reported that LBJ Hospital purchased an MRI in 2020. This was based on a Cabinet report from then LBJ CEO Faumuina John Faumuina in October 2020 as reported in the media.
Samoa News subsequently learned that the MRI mentioned by former Lyndon Johnson CEO Fomuina in his speech was not purchased – a deposit was paid to MedPharm in October 2020, but the balance of $1.5 million was never paid.
However, the $500,000 deposit was not returned but was used to pay off LBJ’s outstanding balance to MedPharm, which provided equipment and services to LBJ under a service contract with the previous LBJ administration. MedPharm apparently used the deposit as part of the money it claimed to be owed for the contract and services.
Thus, complaints in the last few years about malfunctioning MRIs at President Lyndon Johnson’s residence probably referred to CT scanners, not MRIs.
The Helmsley Charitable Trust generously donated an MRI machine to Lyndon Johnson, the first ever received by American Samoa, to help improve its health care.
