Champs-Elysees to be restored to its former glory in $370 million project

Paris’ once-glamorous Champs-Élysées is about to be reborn as the “world’s most beautiful jogging route.” French officials have unveiled an ambitious €250 million ($370 million) plan to “rebeautify” the famous Parisian avenue in a project that will prioritize pedestrian traffic.

A five-year, €5 million ($7.4 million) study commission is trying to restore the traffic-clogged thoroughfare to its former glory by 2030. The plan comes amid growing discontent with the nearly two-kilometer stretch through the heart of the French capital. Commission president Marc-Antoine Jamet said the revamp was driven by “alarming” complaints that the road was “no longer loved by residents or tourists.” “In short, everyone is fleeing it,” he said.

The remedies include reducing the number of motor vehicle lanes from six to four, doubling the width of bike lanes and increasing pedestrian space by 13%. The 1,800-page plan also calls for creating new green spaces and “the most beautiful jogging routes in the world.”

Jamet added: “It’s a question of maintaining a balance between foreign tourists and Parisians, between public and private events.”

In addition to increasing space for cyclists and walkers, the plan calls for more public restrooms and seating areas and “plant lounges” that would provide seating, shade and fountains.

The committee also called for preserving the Belle Époque street furniture on the Champs-Élysées, giving it the “design lines of the Champs-Élysées” and giving it “overall harmony”. The Daily Telegraph noted that the eyes of the world will be on the Champs-Élysées during the upcoming Summer Olympics, as it is just a short walk from several venues.
