(CNS): The Elite Sports Club women’s team won the Cayman Islands Football Association Women’s FA Cup after a dramatic comeback victory over Sundowns in a penalty shootout on June 2. Elite Sports Club scored four shots on goal in the shootout, while Sundowns scored only two goals, and Elite Sports Club finally won the championship after a challenging season.
“It wasn’t easy, but we persevered to the end,” said Elite captain Deondra Kelly. “I’m very, very proud of my girls.”
Although Elite won the match, Sunset was the first to score when Seleste Ayala scored with just seconds left in the first half, with Sunset controlling the majority of the match. The goal gave Sunset momentum in the second half, but Elite’s Kate Amigo equalized in the 57th minute.
“We knew we had some challenges this season, but we wanted to win this game. I’m proud that we were able to get the job done,” Kelly added.
