Businesswoman and philanthropist Chawezi Banda, popularly known as Cha Cha, today paid one year’s rent for physically challenged visual artist Chris Chayera.

During a visit to the Chayera family home in Kawale, Lilongwe, Cha Cha said she was inspired by Mr Chayera’s resilience and that he truly embodied the concept that “disability is not powerlessness”.

“Seeing how hard he was going through to make a living, I thought it would be a relief for him to at least look after his rent for a year. I firmly believe it would really help him save the money he would have spent on rent and other expenses,” she said.

Cha Cha, who also bought three of Chayera’s artworks and promised to help market them, added that she noticed the wheel Chayera was using was too small for his size, so she will work on getting him a wider, higher and more comfortable wheel.

Chayela was so overjoyed at the gesture that she was speechless and just thanked God for this “wonderful day”.

Even the landlord, Ms. Diness Maliketi, thanked Cha Cha for the kind gesture and said the Chayera family is now relieved because paying the rent has never been an easy task for them.
